Day of Surprises

This day was full of surprises. It started on a great foot with a morning run on Paseo Montejo, which I love. I called Mike as I was cooling down, and we were chatting as I walked toward my apartment. Then, as I got to my building and started to open the door, I noticed that the barefoot homeless guy that had been keeping pace with me on the other side of my street was now stopped and watching me with his pants undone and, you guessed it, getting his jollies right there in broad daylight. I said to Mike, who was still on the phone, "Um, I'm looking at a man's penis right now." Needless to say, we were both pretty stunned.

I went inside and he disappeared, so that was the end of that. The rest of the day was normal, but I did go out at lunch and ran into the doggie buddy I've been stalking, who I call Santa's Little Helper because he looks like the dog on the Simpsons. SLH ran away like I was going to beat him when he saw me :( but now I know where he's living- an empty lot- so I can start leaving him dog food. I'm happy about that. Today I just left him some dog biscuits I've been carrying in my purse. I went back to check after I left them and they were gone.

But tonight was the best, and totally made up for me seeing that homeless man's penis this morning. I walked to the park after work, which I do a lot, but tonight was an especially nice night for it, breezy and cool. It was gorgeous actually.  I wandered around and into a couple of stores and even found a really cute dress for $10. After that, I thought I heard my favorite guitarist playing in the park, and sure enough, there he was. It's this young guy from South Korea who is traveling around playing music for money. I'm not even that into live music, or guitar particularly, but he had me mesmerized the first time I saw him. What's weird is that he wasn't even singing that first time; it was just instrumental. And still. I probably watched him for half an hour, transfixed.  But tonight, he was singing. And that voice! It was this beautiful falsetto that created an other-worldly feeling to go with his guitar.  He basically had the whole park spellbound. People that walked by would just stop and stare. It was fantastic, and I sat and watched him until he was finished, thinking that I couldn't believe he didn't sing the other night, with a voice like that. Plus, all his songs seem to be original; I didn't recognize any of them, and some of them I think were in Korean, but at the same time they felt weirdly familiar, like I could sing along.

I'm gushing a little, I know... but he affected me.  I feel like that's what art does for us. I chatted with him a bit after he played, and I even bought his CD even though I don't have a CD player.  He said he's here in Merida for a while and he really likes it. His name is Jo-Je. He was sweet and I felt like he was up for chatting more, but I also felt like I was starting to flirt so I just thanked him and told him I'd see him around.

It was a windy and energizing walk (fly) home and I  saw Santa's Little Helper again and threw him some more biscuits. Then, when I got in the house, I was greeted with yet another surprise-- a little furry face on the other side of my living room window.

There were two faces, in fact. Opossums! The one guy was so close I could determine his gender. I hope he doesn't decide to bite through the screen and snuggle up with me tonight.
