Next Stop – San Miguel de Allende

I grabbed this awesome shot of San Miguel from Wikipedia

I was tired when I woke up this morning because I have some very active opossums living in the vines outside my window that have been waking me up in the night. Enjoy the cringe-worthy photo...

Opossum #1 outside my kitchen window

But after I got up and had some coffee, I got online because I knew I had to make a decision today. Two, in fact. I had to figure out when and where I was going to live next. Being less than two weeks from month's end, that might seem kind of last minute, but I've learned that although I may be missing out on cheaper Airbnbs by booking late, otherwise it really doesn't pay to plan ahead. Life is too unpredictable (especially when your boyfriend is cruising around on a sailboat), and I like to stay flexible for that.

So anyway,  I had originally rented this apartment in Merida until March 3. However, I had the recent realization that there's no way my dental appointments will be done by then, so today I asked the landlord if I could extend my stay a week. He said yes, so now I leave Merida on March 10th. That was decision #1.

Decision #2 was already mostly made, but now it's official– from here I'm going to San Miguel de Allende, that charming town in the hills northwest of Mexico City that's been on my list for a while now. I'm pretty excited. I know some people say there are too many expats and tourists there, but I can't see letting that stop me. After all, I'm an expat and tourist myself.

It reminds me of Antigua, Guatemala

I booked a cute-looking, one-bedroom Airbnb close to the center of town, from March 10th to April 7th. The apartment is $600/month, which is $100 over my self-imposed, remote living budget, but San Miguel is not the cheapest city in Mexico so I expected that I might go over. And sure, I could have gotten something for less outside the city a bit, but at the end of the day I'm only going to be there a month, so I want to be in the town. Plus, it's still pretty darn cheap!

My next apt. Love that rooftop terrace!

It will be a great time of year to go to San Miguel, too. The weather is warming up to its famous spring-like temps of low 80s by day and 60s by night, and I will also be there for the big week of Easter festivities and processions, called Semana Santa. I'm hoping Mike will come and see me, and my parents might even visit, too. Should be another good month!

Money spent today
100 pesos - groceries
$600 USD rent for March
= $605 USD
